Mowbi in The Portland Press Herald

Check out this write up by the Portland Press Herald on how the Freeport Merchant’s Association is using Mowbi.

Freeport is now in the palm of your hand

A new Web application provides on-the-go information about shops, restaurants and hotels.

FMA iPhone 155x300 Mowbi in The Portland Press HeraldFREEPORT — Want to know more about what businesses in Freeport are offering? Where to get the best takeout pizza? What hotels are nearby?

There’s an app for that.

The Freeport Merchants Association has launched the Freeport App, which can be downloaded for free from iTunes.

The association’s executive director, Myra Hopkins, said this offer of the latest in marketing technology will benefit residents, travelers and businesses.

“This opportunity puts the Freeport Merchants Association and its entire membership at the leading edge of what seems to be an explosion in mobile capability,” Hopkins said.

The association comprises 130 businesses, including shops, restaurants and hotels. Membership fees help keep services such as a comprehensive map and the Web application free to travelers and residents.

“Mobile devices are becoming more and more powerful and ever more present. As this medium expands, so does the marketing impact and opportunity that is offered by it,” Hopkins said.

Having seen travelers on the streets of Freeport this summer with smart phones in hand, Hopkins said the Freeport App will enhance their experience.

For example, she said, if someone is looking for the best place to order a pizza to go, they can pull up the application, search the dining function and find the restaurant, menu and phone number immediately.

The Freeport Merchants Association partnered with Pulp+Wire and Mowbi, two Portland-based design, Web and mobile firms, to facilitate the creation of the application, which was launched two weeks ago.

Members of the association have a page in the mobile website that acts as an enhanced listing, complete with color and template options and company information.

“You will have the Freeport experience at your fingertips,” she said.

In addition to the business listings, there are options such as text clubs for text-message marketing or mobile invoicing, allowing businesses to create and send invoices to customers electronically.

The Freeport App can be downloaded via iTunes on the iPhone, iTouch or any Web-browsing phone.

Portland, Maine Uses Text Messaging to Squash Violence

chief announces texting plan Portland, Maine Uses Text Messaging to Squash Violence

Text Messaging has new uses

The police chief in Portland, Maine has  found a new use for text messaging. The increasing violence in the Old Port district, had local police and  bar owners questioning to keep overly intoxicated individuals off the streets. They found the answer in technology. Bar Tenders will now use a text messaging program to inform other bars of rowdy, or over intoxicated patrons that may be headed their way.

Here is how it works: A patron at Bar X has been drinking for the past 3 hours and he has become loud, abrasive, and belligerent. The bar tender refuses to serve this patron any more alcohol, and the patron is asked to leave the establishment. As this unruly patron heads to Bar Y, the bar tender or security guard sends a text message to other bars that participate in the texting program (all texts are sent to one designated phone number that all participating bars and the police have access to), warning them about the potentially dangerous customer. This same text messaging system sends a message with the patron’s description to police officers who are patrolling the area. There is even an option to capture the patron’s digital pictures, so police and security know exactly who they are looking for.

This program is called “Text a tip and pic” and Portland police and bar owners are optimistic that this text messaging system will significantly improve safety in the Old Port. Read more about this groundbreaking program here: http://www.pressherald.com/news/to-quash-rowdiness-craig-says-bars-can-send-text-warnings_2010-05-28.html

Text Messaging and the use of mobile devices are becoming more mainstream as we become more comfortable with mobile technology. We can expect to see more innovative uses of SMS or Text Messaging like this in the very near future.

What are some unique ways that youcould be using SMS or Texting? The time to start thinking about it-is NOW. Call us to discuss how texting can fit into your business plan. 800-985-9277 or e-mail Bill@mowbi.com or Jordan@mowbi.com

“A newcomer to mobile commerce is going with the same business model, targeting small businesses, but offering significantly richer mobile experiences for $20 a month (for product catalogs of up to 1,000 items) and the ability to inexpensively create basic mobile apps for smartphones. That newcomer is App Publishing LLC, and yesterday it launched Mobile Store Maker, a self-service system that enables retailers to create their own m-commerce sites, with App Publishing connecting the site to payment manager Authorize.net and offering checkout via credit card, Google or PayPal.”
